“sound” honors the good and bad of UC Santa Barbara. With every measure, we are shown how the university results in joyous and sorrowful experiences. Every consonance and dissonance captures the magnificent beauty of crossing into adulthood. No matter each students’ distractions and heartbreaks, they are all still sound in developing themselves to be better people.

“sound” is not a piece for carillon, clarinet, and saxophone. It is a piece that explores the ecosystem of UC Santa Barbara. Every student, professor, worker, bird, dog, tree, and crashing wave contributes to the ambiance. The melodies produced by the carillon and woodwinds are not the music of this piece. Instead, the music is the interaction between the performed sheet music and the robust voice of the campus.
